Future-Proof Your Clinical Communications Strategy

Healthcare requires secure, speedy communications that ultimately add value and deliver quality care to the patient. Most hospitals today employ an Apple® or Android® mobile solution equipped with secure texting. Although these abilities are helpful, they don’t address the entire landscape of workflow issues. Mobile clinical workflows linking all care team roles with embedded patient, care team and EMR context makes the difference—inside and outside the hospital.

A secure texting endpoint device is just one piece of clinical communications puzzle. Apple® and Cisco® partnered a year ago to develop an out-of-the-box phone that gives secure text and voice integration within existing infrastructure. It’s essentially an enterprise-grade plug- and-play platform that works with a network but lacks workflow or system integration value. Secure texting on a smartphone is an endpoint solution that needs a workflow strategy to empower it; and that’s exactly what PatientTouch® does.

The PatientTouch design answers the question: “How can we make it easier for the frontline care team to do the right things right?” For example, in an efficient workflow, patient alerts need to transmit from monitors to the appropriate endpoint devices. The PatientTouch context is more than ADT integration. It connects patient data, clinical team members and a full to-do list from the EMR. All of this context is embedded in the text thread and is available in a single inbox, making it easier for the care team to access needed information for the given patient.

Hospital care teams want to get away from more devices, more documentation, excessive desktop use and adding technology upon technology. In the end, more problems are actually created by adding incremental IT. In the expansion and modernization of clinical communications systems, the entire terrain, which is a combination of IT, communications and clinical workflow, should be considered.

A hospital is among the most dynamic and complex of systems. To treat patients with quality, have the best clinical practice, and an enhanced patient experience, you need more than the stopgap of secure texting. Access to the relevant, real-time patient information, coupled with effective communications so that clinical action can be seamless, is at the core of the clinical communications PatientTouch platform.
